The 3 lions fountain

Ronan SIMONNOT & Léo DROUET write...

Built in 1614, this fountain was originally in Rue des Taules but was moved to its present spot at the intersection of the Rue de l’Horloge and the Rue de la Charité.

The black volcanic stone structure contains a small circular basin and a tall central triangular column. There is a rectangular frame on each face. On top of the column is a vase. A statue of a squatting lion decorates each of the angles. The lions look a little silly because of their sitting position, but their heads manage to stare regally, even if there are water jets coming out of their mouths. What the lions are looking towards remains a mystery…

We chose to study this fountain because, in our Lycée, we are members of the Lions fraternity! Also, I was born in August and my astrological sign is Leo. And Léo is called… Léo!
We think that the lions on our fountain are magnificently sculpted; they are formidable but wise beings, protecting our town.

We asked a few local inhabitants about the fountain. Only the older people were able to say anything much about it. One man said: “It’s a lovely fountain; we played next to it when we were children with our friends.” Others think of it as the place they would meet up with their boyfriend or girlfriend.

The lions speak!

This fountain is magical and the three lions can speak, but only at night (because, in daytime, they have water flowing out of their mouths!).

Lion 1: I have a magnificent view, I never get tired of it! It’s always a pleasure to see people crossing!

Lion 2: Speak for yourself! People are really boring; they never stop talking about their problems when standing around our fountain and up on Rue du Commerce… And time just drags by (sigh); I should know, I see it slowly ticking past on the clock tower!

Lion 3: People… pigs, more like! I see them stuffing themselves in that restaurant every day.
